Home Gym Electrical Requirements and Setup
Most home gym equipment has modest power requirements, but ignoring electrical planning leads to tripped breakers, fire hazards, and equipment damage. This guide helps you assess your power needs, plan circuits, and ensure safety.
Power Requirements by Equipment
List every electrical device and its wattage:
- Treadmill: 600–2,400W depending on speed
- Electric garage heater (240V): 4,000–5,000W
- Portable space heater (120V): 1,500W—maxes out a 15A circuit alone
- Elliptical/bike: 100–300W
- LED shop lights: 40–100W total
- Fans and TV: 150–500W combined
Circuit Sizing and Dedicated Circuits
Standard circuits are 15A (1,800W) or 20A (2,400W) at 120V. Code requires continuous loads use max 80% capacity. A treadmill at full speed needs its own 20A circuit. Never plug a treadmill and space heater on the same circuit.
240V for Garage Heaters
Electric garage heaters require 240V with dedicated wiring. Installation costs
GFCI Protection
GFCI outlets are legally required in garages and basements. They detect ground faults and cut power in milliseconds, preventing electrocution. Cost:
Extension Cord Safety
Use heavy-duty 12-gauge cords minimum for treadmills. Never daisy-chain cords or run them under rubber mats. Replace any cord warm to the touch. Plan permanent outlets within 6 months.
